The People’s House to explore favorable
downtown location!

The People’s House is considering the Historic Olympia Steam Plant building at 113 Thurston Ave. N.E. as a potential site.  This location would be ideal for us, given its proximity to transit and other services. We are working with the landlord, talking with neighbors and contacting the city to move this discussion forward. We have submitted a letter of intent and are in the initial stages of discussion regarding this location. There will be an upcoming public forum and formal public hearing process through the city of Olympia’s conditional use permit process.  We are dedicated to public process and addressing community concerns.

We are committed to doing everything we can to be a positive addition to the community and neighborhood. We would appreciate hearing
your concerns, and especially, your thoughts on how we might be a
positive force for change in downtown Olympia.

Advocate for The People's House!!

Monday Aug. 12, Tuesday Aug. 13th, 2013

Monday 8/12 11am-1pm Thurston County HOME consortium meeting: Thurston County Public Health & Social Services 412 Lilly Rd. NE, Olympia, WA 98506-5132, Room 107ABC.

Tuesday 8/13 7pm Olympia City Council meeting: City Hall main meeting room! Arrive at 6:15-6:30pm to sign up for the public comment period.

It is exciting times for the shelter project as we are in the midst of public process and community change!! True transformation and community change does not come without growing pains and difference of opinions. We all come to conversations with generations of experiences and values and it is so important that all voices be represented.

You have an opportunity to have your voice be represented in the coming week! Attending the Thurston County HOME consortium meeting Aug. 12th 11-1pm and the public comment period at the Olympia city council meeting this coming Tuesday August 13th 7pm are both great opportunities to exercise your rights as citizens to advocate for The People's House shelter project. It is likely that a group of people in opposition to the project will be expressing their concern and it would be a huge help if we had support from you all in this discussion. We hope to remind the City council of the great need for a managed solution to the issues facing our community and that The People's House is a vital step in that direction. We must also talk about the necessity of acting quickly on the siting of this project in a location in proximity to downtown Olympia because otherwise we will be suffering a huge lack of shelter when the rain comes if we do not. This is an urgent matter for our community and I encourage you all to get out there and speak up because your voice is so important!

I do not know all of your personal situations but I imagine that you all have diverse life experiences as parents, students, children, faith community members and clergy, professionals, social service professionals, food service providers, downtown business owners, members of the LGBTQQIA community and many more. We need to hear your voices about the importance of this project and the positive change it could make in your various circles and for our community as a whole.

Sincerely,
Meg Martin
